Bar fines seem to be peculiar to Thailand.
Bars employ girls or ladyboys so as to entice customers to sit at the bar and by drinks.
Virtually all the girls are available to go with / away with customers. However, the bar owner wants to be compensated for their not being around to pull in more customers. He therefore charges a Bar Fine. Paying the Bar Fine releases the girl from further work in the bar that day/ night and she is free to go with you out of the bar with you.
The amount of a Bar Fine depends on the bar and type of bar. A typical open fronted Bar Beer will charge between Bt 200 and Bt 300. A typical agogo will charge between Bt 500 and Bt 700 with premium rates of Bt 1000 over Christmas, New Year and other Thai Festivals.
Bar Fines are paid to the owner of the bar. They are nothing to do with how much you need to pay the girl for her services. That is extra and paid directly to the girl. Most bar beer girls will expect Bt 1000 though in low season when there are few customers you can negotiate down. Agogo girls want more. They see themselves as the pick of the crop and expect more. They want on average between Bt 1500 and Bt 2500 and some want more. Always agree the price with a girl before you commit to paying the Bar Fine.
There is also a duration issue with the girls which affects the price. This is known locally as Long Time V Short Time. Short Time is up to a couple of hours though this can be extended. Its normally seen as the time taken to get you to the hotel, showered and shagged. Believe me some can accomplish all this in 20 minutes and be on their way to the next customer.
Long Time tends to be until tomorrow morning. They charge more for this both because of the time involved and because some horny guys can and do shag them several times through the night!
In the bar, girls earn commission in a couple of ways. Firstly, they probably get between Bt50 and Bt100 from the Bar Fine. In addition, if you buy them a drink- known as a "ladydrink" at around Bt100 to Bt 140, they receive between Bt20 and Bt40 commission at the end of their shift for each drink. These small amounts, along with tips are paid to them daily and keep the girls in food on a day to day basis.
All prices in Thailand are negotiable. You can beat the prices down a lot some times. I would however recommend that people take a middle road for whats fair for them and whats fair for the girls. Being over generous is not helpful. The girls will praise you to your face and call you a fool to your back. It also tends to overinflated prices for others.
