BANGKOK: Thailand’s military will stop branding trans-sexual conscripts as mentally disturbed, and will list them in a new “third category” as neither male nor female, a senior officer said on Wednesday. Thai men are required to report for the draft once they turn 21. Under the current system, trans-sexuals are rejected as suffering from “a mental disorder.” Gay rights groups complained that the label penalises trans-sexuals for the rest of their lives, because men are required to prove if they have completed their national service when they apply for jobs or bank loans. When trans-sexuals submit their military rejection forms declaring they have a mental disorder, they are automatically disqualified from many jobs and mortgages. Lieutenant General Somkiat Suthivaiyakij, head of the defence ministry’s Reserve Command Department, said the military would immediately stop using the mental disorder label. “The military is trying to find a new word for a third category that is neither male nor female, that would not discriminate against trans-sexuals,” he said. Until the army decides on the new category, trans-sexual conscripts will be turned away with a form saying they have an illness that cannot be cured within 30 days. afp

Hi Ecstatic - thanks for the intersting post.
I think that there is one problem that will sadly continue. The military authorities at the time of conscription are still looking for those that they think are swinging the lead - lying to avoid conscription. Ladyboys are still going to have to prove that they are genuinely transgendered to receive the new label- of having an illness that lasts more than 30 days- in exactly the same way as they did before- though the label is different.

Such proof to a military doctor is particularly difficult fo a non- hormonal, non silicon implanted ladyboy.

Basically - ideally she should still need to have - breast implants or as a second choice, have taken hormones for long enough to have produced significant breast growth. Otherwise they still run the risk of being included in the draft as a liar.

The new label is a help in reducing stigmatization in some ares of life maybe later on in life. I dont however think that it goes very far. However, maybe the primary thing to be thankful for is that the army and with it members of society have begun to take the issue on board. - Any move to reducing the stigmatization of the transgendered is a good move, however small.

Thanks, Somchai. Yes, it's still only a small step, but it is progress, and that's always a good thing. Maybe someday we'll remove the stigma completely.

Hmm....
but now the real crazy ones won't be identified.
We know there is some.
:D

Ann will be happy to hear this change most likely.
She has to report for conscription on April 1.
Do you think they'll let her out of it?
I think her chances are good, eh?
:p

She didn't have to go.
The army talked with her for a while and took some pictures, then released her.
In her words of english she said "I go speak to man with bullets"

As I said- 400 grams of silicone no problem - and even the man with bullets and with the camera would see how very well endowed she is. She has to be a katoey. :D:D:D:D

No military service - end of story. :D:D:D
Until the next crisis then.
The trials and tribulation of having a LB girlfriend.

LADY-BOYS REPORT FOR DUTY AT SATTAHIP NAVAL BASE.

Ten kateuys or Ladies of the Second Category, counted as Patient Type 3, (those suffering from diseases which cannot be healed within 30 days), gathered to report for duty at Sattahip Navy Base on 8 April, 2008. They normally have to report three times to prove that they actually fall under the category of Patient Type 3, but these second category ladies said they wanted to join the navy as nurses take care of naval patients.

At 9.00 am, on 8 April 2008, the ten, 21-year-old "Patient Type 3" men, both sexually and non-sexually transformed, presented themselves before Colonel Piyachat Toopthong, the President of both the Blood Test and the Registered Personnel Committee, 2551, and his team at Sattahip School Meeting. They constitute the selection committee for Thai men in the Sattahip area born in 2530 (1987). The ten wanted to draw their black marker, indicating that they are exempted from enrolling in the army or navy.

The Sattahip Selection Unit covers five sub-districts in the area, consisting of Sattahip , Samaesarn, Bangsaray, Najomtien and Plutaluang. This year, the navy needs only 80 persons to join. There were 169 black markers and 80 red markers issued, with 16 men who volunteered to join without drawing the markers.

Bunpot Chaitanom (21) from Sattahip, a second category lady and university student, acted as the spokesperson for the group of second category ladies. Bunpot told the media that they actually wanted to join the navy because they think they can be nurses, and didn't want not to avoid their duties.

Mr. Piyapan Sakorn (21), who is also a student, on the other hand, said he doesn't want to join the navy because he wants to continue his studies. However, he has to report every year for the committee to decide whether he is mentally a man or a "Patient Type 3" and qualified for exemption. He believes getting an education is the only way to prove to people that he is normal and acceptable to society. News Type : Community
