Here is story of a Canadian and his girlfriend that were shot by a thai police officer.

Remember police (and many thai people in general) do not have the same morals or value of life that we have in Canada and US. Don't expect them to behave rationally or in anyway you can expect proper. Best stay low key and not attract their attention.
Due to corruptness in the system they often feel above the law.
I am not blaming these people, but it does seem they attracted the ire of the police officer for some reason or another.
